Public School »

The preeminent position of the United States today can be attributed to many factors, but a significant one is the good quality of education that its citizens received. The United States has always been at the forefront of school reform, and this has resulted in this country having a preeminent position in industry and the fields of science and technology. The main reason for this was that a lot of money was poured into its system of public schools, so called because they are owned and run by the public sector.

This paramount position that the United States has enjoyed for long has however been eroded of late due to the deterioration of the quality of education provided, especially in public schools. There are many reasons for this, and while a main reason is the lack of funding for schools caused by budget cuts, it has also been caused by a lack of sufficient parental involvement. This is a problem of gigantic proportions, and its result is already being seen in that there is a reduction in the numbers of American students going to college. This will have a long term detrimental effect on the economy, since industry will not have a sufficiently large pool of skilled labor to hire from unless they get people from abroad to do it. There will also be a drop in the quality of the research and development taking place in the United States.

The government has already put plans in place to reform the public schooling system before it gets too late. This involves a massive injection of funds as well as participation of various sections of society. Industry is also taking a leading role in the endeavor to improve the quality of education.

Education Reform »

The education system in the United States is in a sorry state now, with a shocking reduction in the proportion of Americans in the global population of college students. Just three decades ago, a third of all college students in the world were in the United States, but now this has shrunk to a shocking 14 percent. The reduction of the number of American students going to college has many negative ramifications, both for the long term and for the short term. It is therefore appropriate that there has begun a new debate on the need for education reform in the United States.

The declining standards of education of the average young American will result in this country losing its competitive edge to other countries which are focused and successful in creating an educated and skilled workforce. It is also a fact that a country’s supremacy in terms of industrialization and technology is dependent on the quality of education it’s student get, particularly in Math and Science. The unfortunate truth is that there are insufficient numbers of American students graduating in these vital subjects and this will lead to a critical shortage of scientists and engineers in the immediate future.

It is not just the government that is worried by the enormity of the consequences of this problem. Industry is equally worried since they will have to bear the brunt not having a skilled workforce. Many student groups have also joined in the clamor for the education system to be improved.

There are many reasons for this crisis, and one of them is that the curriculum in schools has not been updated for a very long time. In addition, there is a grievous lack of funding for schools which is causing many of them to shut down or to reduce the quality of education they offer.

This glaring need is being addressed by some very powerful people, not all of whom are in the government. The billionaires Bill & Melinda Gates have added their immense clout to the push for education reform, and their foundation is collaborating with the United States government to improve the quality and reach of education. While the President of the United States has managed to get a stimulus package for education, the Gates have also poured money into this program.

This collaboration has caused no small controversy since not everybody agrees with their method of getting things done.

The United States has been the leader in education reform over the last century, but it has slowed down the pace considerably. Ironically, the students who benefit most from higher education in the United States are from abroad. It is time that government, industry and everybody involved with the education system join together to find a good solution to this problem. This should not be allowed to go on for too long, because it might reach a point from where it is difficult to turn back. The only loser in this case will be the United States.

Getting into college is an enormous achievement, and it involves getting more than admission into the institution. A person needs to be able to afford the expense of studying in college, and most families can find this beyond their means. This is where college financial aid comes in, since there are many attractive programs whereby a person can get the money to go to college. Even though there are many federal programs to help a person with student loans and need based awards, university scholarships are most sought after because a person who is the beneficiary of a scholarship does not need to repay the money, unlike other types of financial aid which need to be repaid over time. It is possible for some students to get their entire academic and living expenses covered with the help of the right kind of scholarship.

A person looking to join a good college needs to put in a lot of effort to see what combination of financial aid he or she will be using. Since many colleges and institutions offer scholarships to a wide range of students, it obviously makes a lot of sense to study this subject in some detail.

For starters, it is important to know that there are different types of university scholarships available. There are merit-based scholarships that are determined by a person’s achievements in academics, athletics, the arts or community service. These are usually given to truly outstanding students. There are also need-based scholarships that are usually given to people whose families are more financially needy than the others. Some of these scholarships are federal, in which case the student will need to fill out a Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA).

Career-specific scholarships are awarded on the basis of certain academic streams the person wishes to follow. As is indicated by the name, these scholarships are given on the understanding that the student will enter that specific profession. There are also student-specific scholarships which are given on the basis of the specific demographic the student belongs to. Many colleges offer scholarships on the basis of race, gender or religion. The purpose of these scholarships is to promote diversity in the educational institution and to give students belonging to certain underprivileged sections of society an opportunity to get a good education.

These university scholarships are highly coveted since the money does not have to be returned and the competition to get them is consequently very stiff. These scholarships represent the only chance that certain students have of getting good quality education. A person who wants a scholarship to go to university has to therefore get all the necessary information to see which category he or she belongs to. It would be a pity if a person missed out on such an opportunity due to insufficient information or preparation. There are many websites that have a lot of detailed information on this subject, and a person should certainly visit them in order to get all the necessary inputs.

Having the child accepted to college is a source of great pride to families, but it also causes a lot of stress to the family because most people are not able to afford the huge fees involved, which can amount to thousands of dollars, even for colleges offering non technical courses. Most families cannot afford to send a child to college without getting some form of financial aid. There are many types of financial aid that a student or parents can avail of, but there might still be a shortfall in the amount of money required. Private student loans are a means of covering the difference in the money available and the money required for the years in college.

College is very expensive, and the total cost includes tuition, accommodation as well as food. There are many college, state and federal programs to provide financial aid to students but they might not cover the entire amount required. It might be difficult for families to put in this extra amount given that people’s incomes have dropped whereas expenses have increased very much. It is for this reason that increasing numbers of people are taking private student loans.

Private student loans are useful for other reasons as well. There may be unexpected expenses that crop up during a student’s stint in college that a part time job cannot pay for. These include the purchase of expensive new books or a computer. They are also helpful to pay off local transportation costs, which can be very expensive for a student on a tight budget. A student might even need to travel on educational trips during these college years, and a student loan from a private agency will easily cover it. The other reason that these loans are needed is the often overlooked fact that colleges can hike up their tuition fees.

There are certain advantages to applying for these loans rather than for federal ones. Any person who has a good credit rating can apply for these loans, and they are not limited to people who have financial difficulties. These loans are also very flexible and you need apply for them only when you have the greatest need for the money. The response time of the lender is very little, when compared to federal loans, and a person can get the money within a few days. This is probably the reason for the volumes of these loans growing at a much higher rate than federal loans. If the student can get another person with a good credit rating to co-sign the loan, the rate of interest the loan will be offered at will be much lower than usual.

There are many companies that offer these student loans, and a borrower is advised to do a study of all the loans available before taking a loan from any one company. It is possible to get loans to cover 100% of one’s education expenses by taking a combination of federal and college financial aid and these private loans.

Sending a child to college is a dream for most parents, and their joy at their child’s acceptance at a college is almost always tempered by the fear that they will not be able to pay the tuition fees. College tuition fees can run into tens of thousands of dollars over the four year period that a person attends college, but it can easily climb much higher that that if the degree that is being pursued is a professional one. Most families can only afford to send their children to college if they can get college financial aid even if they have been saving money for years to pay the tuition fees.

Many people pay for college tuitions by saving in advance, or having the person who is going to college work to pay for college expenses. Most families do a combination of these methods, but it is very difficult to get by without any financial aid because there are certain to be so many other unscheduled expenses.

It is very important that families know all about how to get college financial aid so that what should be a source of excitement and joy should not cause the family a lot of stress. Financial aid can take various forms, such as scholarships and grants, need-based awards and student loans.

An overwhelming majority of students in the United States get some sort of need based aid. The amount of aid is calculated by taking account of the estimated entire cost of education and the family’s financial status and their ability to pay. A family that needs this form of aid has to complete a Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA). Another factor that is taken into account is the number of children in a family. Different colleges have different methods of calculating how much aid a family is eligible for. What is common to all colleges is that need based aid must be reapplied each year.

Scholarships and grants are very popular with students because the money that one gets by this method does not have to be repaid. There are many federal grants in addition to grants instituted by different state governments. The state grants are also given on the basis of FAFSA.

Student loans are the third option, and they have to be availed of only if there is no other option. Most people take student loans against their home equity and the rates of interest are very reasonable. The Federal Government makes two types of loans available to students at low interest and the payment schedule can be deferred to long after the person has graduated.

It is extremely important that the person who intends to go to college sit down with his or her family and discuss the various options of getting enough money to afford college tuition fees. They can then put a plan in place in order to get the right amount of college financial aid so that there is no unnecessary debt burden on the individual or the family.
